A malignancy stricken previous fighter who struggled to the highest point of an Afghan mountain treating injured troops has won the most astounding US military honor.
Ronald Shurer, 39, was the main surgeon on the 6 April 2008 mission to catch an aggressor pioneer in the Shok Valley when his group was trapped.
The previous Green Beret was at first granted the Silver Star, yet confidants said he merited the best honor.
US President Donald Trump gave him the Medal of Honor on Monday.
The previous staff sergeant left the military in 2011 to join the US Secret Service.
Refering to his "prominent chivalry", Mr Trump said numerous more warriors would have passed on that day notwithstanding his chivalrous activities.
"I want to be that well known," the president included, after group of onlookers praise for the previous surgeon.
